Summary

A. Bardal, E. Zaostrovskikh. Far East-2050: Transport Infrastructure for
International Cooperation

The article is based on the results of a comprehensive scientific study done by Economic Research Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences. The authors have attempted to describe possible ways of development of the transport infrastructure in the Russian Far East as a key economic sector for implementing the capacity of international cooperation till 2050.

V. Portyakov. Deng Xiaoping’s Foreign Policy Percepts and Their Current
Interpretation

The history and circumstances of the formulation by Deng Xiaoping in the late 1980s — early 1990s of a number of recommendations about foreign policy of China are investigated. The study in the PRC of Deng’ legacy as a long-term strategic course of the country in the international arena is analysed. The interpretation of Deng’ formula in the United States is described. The author reviewed the current debate in China about the need to continue to follow the formula of “keep a low profile while doing something real”.

The features of the formation and influence of high-tech TNCs in China on the deve­lopment of national innovation system at current stage are considered. Special attention is paid to the growth of national innovation system in China and to its role in Chinese economy.

Development of trade relations between Russia and Its partners in the BRICS group involves several positive trends as well as some problems mostly seen also in its trade with other countries. Russia’s BRICS partners are among the fast-growing major economies in the world, the expansion and improvement of structural cooperation with them meets Russian national interests.

China improves legislation on environmental cooperation, biodiversity, genetic resources, biotechnologies, creates a platform for trade in patents and different forms of intellectual property in accordance with the requirements of the WTO.

V. Kuzminkov, V. Pavlyatenko. The True Meaning of the Joint Soviet-Japanese Declaration of 1956

The paper deals with an important historical stage in the postwar history of the Soviet-Japanese relations negotiations and the signing of the Joint Soviet-Japanese Declaration of 1956, upon which almost all the issues traditionally addressed by the post-war peace treaties had been resolved. Based on a comprehensive analysis of many documents the authors present their views on the true role of the Joint Declaration and its historical significance to the bilateral Soviet (Russian)-Japanese relations.

V. Usov. Secrets of Zhongnanhai. Who and How Eavesdroped Mao Zedong

The author describes the little-known events of 1950–1960 in the history of modern China and the CPC — «illegal» tape recording of interviews, speeches and directions of Mao Zedong and his reaction to such «wiretapping». Head of the CPC Central Committee Office Yang Shangkun was declared the main culprit responsible for this. His version of events is also attached.

A. Yurkiewich. «The Delegation of Dr. Sun Yat-sen» in Moscow and a Chance to General Chiang Kai-shek

The author argues that the turning point in the career of Chiang Kai-shek, who in the early 1920s did not have the authority in political and military circles, was the mission to head so called «delegation of Dr. Sun Yat-sen» that visited Moscow in autumn 1923. Success of the mission helped Chiang Kai-shek to hold the post of chief of the Whampoa military school and subsequently form military units under his command.

N. Mamaeva, I. Sotnikova. Song Qingling in the Political Life of China

Song Qingling (1893–1981) belonged to a rare constellation of women politicians in China, who were constantly in the thick of things, had a significant influence on the socio-political life of the country. As the wife and collaborator of the first president of the Republic of China Sun Yat-sen, she maintained creativity throughout her life, represented the left wing of the Kuomintang and was an active member of the democratic movement. In PRC she held high public office, headed the Chinese-Soviet friendship society.

D. Pavlov, N. Pavlova. Colonel I. Strelbitsky: the First Russian «Military Agent» in Korea

The article, based on documents of the Russian military and historical archive, covers activities of the first Russian military attache in Korea Col. Strelbitsky in 1896–1903. The authors conclude that the contribution by Strelbitsky to Russian-Korean relations was miscalculated in historical works. His activities were much more fruitful in the sphere of cultural communication and mutual perception of two neighboring countries, rather than in development of military cooperation between them.

S. Toroptsev. Studies of Chinese Culture and Education in Russia (1990s)

The article highlights main tendencies in Russian sinological studies in the fields of culture and education in the 1990s. The author estimates the new challenges and new tasks the cultural studies faced, reveals main trends in philological, linguistics, theater and cinema stu­dies as well as those in fine arts and education; he analyses the problems of scientific research and translation while mentioning the emergence of new theoretical concepts.

Starting Taiwan studies in the 1990s, Russian scientists have succeeded in drawing a picture of major elements of the Taiwan issues, identified trends of the situation on the island and around it, first of all in the relations across the Strait, elaborated the optimal position for Russia on the Taiwan issue and valued its importance to us.

E. Zavidovskaya. Ethnographic Materials Addressing the Funeral Rituals in the Republican China of the 1920–30s

The paper is based on a scope of Republican period surveys of the popular religion conducted by Chinese and Western scholars. The geography of the studies includes Bei­ping, Guandong, vicinity of Hangzhou, Suzhou, the capital of Anqing prefecture in Anhui province. The study provides large factual data helping to restore the terrain of popular religion in China prior to large-scale anti-superstition campaigns initiated by KMT and, later on, by CPC.
